C-17. San Antonio TX to Dayton OH
The C-17 was also a project for the school of aerospace medicine in Dayton OH. The aircraft was in San Antonio TX at Randolph AFB. This project was one of our hardest logistical projects. The C-17 needed to be prepared to go across country via truck and trailer. We made a series of engineered splice cuts on the fuselage. The top of the fuselage went in 5 sections and the lower side went in one long section. With the help of specialized trailers and steerable dollies the trip was started. The school of aerospace medicine did not want the outboard wings, vertical, or the horizontals.
Our trip from San Antonio started with us going northwest. We proceeded north to Oklahoma, into Kansas, over to Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, and then into Ohio. When we arrived at Wright Patterson AFB, we then carefully moved the aircraft inside of a training facility. While moving the aircraft inside we cleared the hanger doors with about a half inch on each side. The aircraft is now being used as an active trainer training medical students of the USAF.
