F4U-5N Corsair
This aircraft was part of a multi aircraft project. The aircraft was disassembled and transported from MCAS Miramar and reassembled in Irvine CA for the Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum. Just a little history on the aircraft: Bureau Number 122189. The aircraft is a night-fighter variant of the F4U-5, an upgraded version of the F4U-4. As a night-fighter, the F4U-5N has an AN/APS-19 radar on the leading edge of the right wing for tracking targets in the dark. Some of the nicknames the aircraft had were “Whistling Death,” “U Bird,” “The Hog,” “Old Hog-Nose,” “Sweetheart of Okinawa,” and “The Great iron Bird”
